Can someone with diabetes please give me some warning signs. Please don’t send me to a website-I’ve been there 11

Sep 21, 2009 | Warning Signs of Diabetes

The answers are too sketchy. I need specifics. Don’t want "thirst", "hunger", etc. please explain when and the conditions of the symptoms.

Thank you

When I became diabetic, I wasn’t just thirsty. But after I drank a large glass of water, my mouth was dry. There just wasn’t any saliva. I think to just say thirsty is a misnomer. My vision got very blurry and I ‘d just bought new glasses. As far as fatigue goes, I could not get out of bed, except to pee every half hour. Because i ended up in the intensive care unit with ketoacidosis, and so dehydrated, most of my hair fell out three months later. 3 months before i became diabetic, I had a fasting blood sugar of 80, but if they had done an A1c they would have had a better picture of what was going on. So demand an A1C when you go to the doctor, and go today!!!
A1C gives you a 6 week average of your glucose levels.

Get your blood sugar tested regularly. The sooner you are diagnosed the easier it will be to manage.

You never have a dry mouth and are often thirsty can be an indicator but the best early warning sign that I had was I went to the doctor and he did a routine blood test that showed that my glucose was and had been on the high side for some time. They can tell if it has been high for up to the three previous months.

Last week, I have noticed a few odd things…

I’m always thirsy, and constantly have to go to the bathroom. I am also always tired and I’ve lost five pounds in the past few days. My mom thinks it may be anemia, because she has it, too. Could this be possible? Are these early warning signs for diabetes?

These can most definitely be signs of diabetes, especially if blurry vision is thrown into the mix. However, your mom may also be right about anemia, because it presents with some of the same signs and symptoms. The only way to know for sure is to go see your doctor and have him do some blood work. In between times, it might be to your benefit to go get a glucose meter and check your sugars yourself, just to see where you stand. It can help your doctor determine what to do next. Hope this helps!

Urine will increase in volume and frequency when blood glucose rises. The kidneys work to filter blood and try to rid it of the excess sugar. In fact, one of the earliest methods for diagnosing diabetes was to notice the increased sugar content of urine. If it progresses, however, frequent urination will lead to excessive water loss and dehydration, seriously jeopardizing health.

Thirst is noticably increased with high blood glucose because of water losses in urine. In addition, excess sugar concentrates the blood. Both trigger thirst.

In addition, excess sugar concentrates the blood. Both trigger thirst.

Fatique and generalized weakness is noticable for two reasons. One, glucose is unable to be effectively used as a fuel by muscle cells. They are "fuel deprived" and thus less able to perform work. Secondly, dehydration will bring on fatique.

Weight loss may be slow or rapid, but it is usually occuring without explanation. Many people with early diabetes note they are actually eating more and still losing weight. This is the result of water losses, as well as increased breakdown of fat and protein tissues, as the body compensates for poor glucose utilization.

Hunger often increases because glucose, despite being high in the blood, is unavailable to cells as fuel.

Blurred vision may develop because rapidly rising blood sugar levels can cause fluid shifts in the lens of the eye.

Infections of gums, bladder, skin and vaginal yeast can become more problematic and harder to treat. Germs thrive in the high sugar content of blood and body fluids. A woman may have recurrent urinary or vaginal infections.

Another important symptom of noninsulindependent diabetes is recurring or slow-to-heal cuts and sores.

Irritability; drowsiness, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, or itching.
