Glucose in my urine..gestational diabetes? Any info appreciated? 2

Nov 15, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

I am 36 weeks prego and passed my glucose intolerance test at 26 weeks so I was not considered to have gestational diabetes but I frequently had hypoglycemic attacks (usually when I had oj and sugary instant oatmeal for breakfast and waited too long for lunch) Yesterday they found glucose in my urine after I left and my doc called me and told me to cut out the sweets and watch my sugar intake. Does this mean I have gestational diabetes? I did eat ice cream the night before my urine test which was taken early in the am, dont know if that matters. I am going to the doc again on Mon and will have a blood test done to see whats up but until then I would like to know what it is. I am now following a diabetic diet (Im a nurse but not familiar with diabetes, I do know the diet though from working with patients) just in case to reduce the risk of increased insulin production in my baby. Any info? Do you think it was the ice cream that did it? Is the glucose in the urine a sign? I will chose best answer asap and give pos ratings, thank you :)

You are at the very end of your pregnancy.
Yes, it appears that you do have gestational diabetes.
The doctor will talk to you about watching carbohydrates and no, ice cream the night before should not have anything to do with sugar in the urine unless something was wrong.
It is possible that your doctor may want to deliver you a bit early due to the diabetes and the baby may need to be in the NICU for blood tests for 24 hours. There is an increased risk of high insulin production and thus hypoglycemia.
Ask all these question to your doctor and good luck for a strong healthy baby.
The diabetes will resolve right after delivery.

Blood Glucose/Gestational Diabetes test? 6

Nov 15, 2009 | Blood Glucose Diabetes

Ok, My G.D test is in about 7 hours. It is just the onehour test, and I am not supposed to fast. But what can I eat in the morning? I know not pop tarts or anything like that, but is cheerios ok? I have to eat something! Lol. I need answers soon!
Thank you everyone! My test is actually at 9am, so fasting wouldnt be hard, but I AM pregnant, and LOVE food, so I want food now, and was making sure if I ate now I wouldn’t be screwing myself over! Thanks again!

Everyone I know who eats before they go, fail the test. Even if they go on to pass the 3 hour one. My test is in 3 weeks and I am going to fast for it even though I was told I could eat breakfast if I want to. I definitely wouldn’t eat anything sweet. Maybe just toast or unsweetened cereal. My test is very early in the morning so I won’t have any problem fasting. Good luck.

** could it be gestational diabetes **? 4

Nov 03, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

hey i am almost 16 weeks prego .. and i have noticed if i stand up too long .. first i feel like i have to push my belly out .. like i am too full or something even if i haven*t eaten anything or not much at all .. then i begin to get like sweaty .. and i breath all heavy .. i get really hot and flushed and then i feel dizzy and like i am going to pass out .. on top of that i drink a lot like more than a gallon of water a day .. and i always feel thirsty .. for some reason water is the ONLY thing that helps with my thirst !! i just noticed this starting last week .. and i am kind of worried about it b/c of my job .. i am an ultrasound tech so i stand a lot .. my job allows me to sit and scan, but it isn*t the easiest thing to do .. some ultrasounds can take over an hour to 2 hours to complete !! so not being able to stand can be a problem .. has anyone had gestational diabetes or know of anyone who has had it .. what are the signs and symptoms .. thanks <3

Thoes are definalty syptoms of GD, i would go to your doctor asap and he will get you to do a 2 or a 3 hour glucose test and that way you will find out for sure if you have it or not.

Do I have diabetes? Is the blood glucose test included in regular blood work? 7

Nov 03, 2009 | Blood Glucose Diabetes

I am 15. In the last month, I have been feeling very tired-sleep 10-12 hrs/day. I am always thirsty and am hungry a lot. I also urinate frequently. At times, my urine smells sweet. Are these symptoms of type 1 or 2 diabetes? and I get blood work every 3 months. Is the blood glucose test included in the NORMAL ROUTINE blood work preformed by most doctors?
I get blood work done every three months because I have mild Crohn’s Disease. And I also am taking a medication that regulates my thyroid gland so I shouldn’t be this tired. And type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease just like crohn’s so I was just wondering if there was a chance I had diabetes!

Let me say this: You probably don’t have diabetes. A1cs, the blood test that shows your avg blood sugar level over the past 3 months, is generally included in your routine blood tests. Teens require more sleep than adults, and it’s completely normal to sleep, or want to sleep that much sometimes. Appetite also increases to fuel the body of a growing teen, and as you drink more, you have to pee more. I noticed you have a thyroid condition, and that could very well be the cause of your symptoms. Even on meds, you’re bound to have bad days, and sometimes even then, your medication can cause some sleepiness, although you may be more susceptible to the effects at different times. As a 15 year old, it is highly unlikely that you have diabetes, although it is not unheard of! I was diagnosed last year, soon after I turned 19. If you’re worried, it never hurts to ask your doctor. You see them often enough to easily get it under control if it so happens that you DO have it. Good luck!

In Gestational diabetes ,which one is better 2 hr or 1 hr blood glucose tests? 4

Oct 27, 2009 | Blood Glucose Diabetes

Some doctors use 1 hour blood glucose test with a target of less than 130. Others use 2 hour test with a target of less than 120.
What will be the impact if my blood sugars are around 160 to 170 after one hour and around or little less than 120 after two hours?

If you aren’t experiencing gestational diabetes then your glucose should never be as high as 160 to 170. Non diabetics do not reach such extremes. You may be classified as borderline.

Question about blurred vision and pregnancy? 13

Oct 15, 2009 | Diabetes Blurred Vision

I had a blood test 4 days ago for gestational diabetes, and afterwards I was fine, but ever since then I’ve been getting blurred vision off and on. Is it linked to that test, or is it just normal in pregnancy?
I haven’t been lightheaded at all, but I got an instant headache when the blurred vision came on. Also, the other night I could barely hear out of my left ear.

blurred vision and a horrible headache? have you been having any high blood pressure readings? you should call your doctor… if it is related to high blood pressure it could be signs of preeclampsia… are you getting spots in your vision? definitely call your doctor…

how do you get strips for testing blood glucose, to control diabetes? 7

Oct 15, 2009 | Blood Glucose Diabetes

There are three ways , that I know of, to get test strips.
1. From a pharmacy. They keep them locked up behind the counter so you need to know what type of meter you have. The normal price for test strips are 25- $29. 50- $49 100- $89. They are expensive.
2. get your doctor to write a prescription if your insurance will pay for them
3. Some churches give away testing supplies to needed people. I have done this before when I was broke and it was very helpful. Your doctor should have a list of churches/organizations that do this.
Good Luck
