i know the baby tends to be bigger but if they determine that the baby is healthy because of the diet, what other complications could occur during labor??
The two largest risks of GD are a hypoglycemic baby and the risk of placental calcification which occurs as the placenta ages. This can limit the nutrients to the baby but can be monitored via a Biophysical profile to ensure that the baby is well.
Contrary to all you’ll hear/read, the research does not support that women with well-controlled GD have babies that are statistically larger than non-GD babies.
The difference is really about 4 ozs when the GD is well-controlled (either with diet or meds).
Babies born to moms with uncontrolled GD can have disproportionate bodies, meaning the chest/shoulders can be larger than average and lead to a potential shoulder dystocia. However, true SD occurs in about 1/1000 pregnancies so it quite rare.
The best prevention of a SD for a large baby is to labor as upright as possible and changes positions frequently – lying on your back isn’t recommended.
I am having my third biological child (my oldest is my stepson). i had gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy. my doctor said that it is most likely that i will have gestational diabetes with any future pregnancies. so with that being said, i am assuming i will have it again with this new pregnancy. and i have take steps to change my diet accordingly to keep my blood sugar in check. of course they don’t check for diabetes until later in the pregnancy..BUT i will be monitored more closely. (sorry…i ramble when im pregnant), my question is..has anyone been through 2 diabetic pregnancies. can diet and excersise prevent it? or is it more than likely inevitable that i will have gestational diabetes again with this baby.
and i would also like to know your experiences with a second diabetic pregnancy. signs of destress to look for, as i know i am considered "high risk".
thanks
I had gestational dibetes with my second daughter and she was almost 10 lbs at birth but i did not have it with my third and she only weighed 5lb 3.5oz but very healthy. Now i am 6 monthspregnant with baby number four and my only boy, my ob said that he is VERY big and actually change my due date by ten days and may change it more after getting the U/S results back. It is Prob diabetes again so i really don’t think it necisarily comes after having it previously. I really hope this was some help. Good luck and Blessed Be

Tell me if you guys experienced the same thing…
I did the 1 hour gestational diabetes test today
About half way through drinking it, I got really hot. I was almost sweating trying to finish it. I stayed really hot the whole hour of waiting
Not to mention I felt really nauseated, I had to really control myself not to throw up
And I felt pretty light-headed
Is all that normal or maybe a sign of something?
Its normal because a lot of people aren’t used to getting so many sugar levels at once. I took the test a month ago and I felt sick for a few hours later. My doctor said its a totally normal reaction to the test. It is not an indication of the presence of gestational diabetes. If it makes you feel any better my test came out negative. Good luck!
I’m on my 3rd pregnancy and have only been tested during my last pregnancy for gestational diabetes. I’m just wondering if you are supposed to be tested each time or only if there are warning signs. If so what are the warning signs, and how far along should you be to be tested? My last pregnancy was over 6 years ago so I’ve forgotten quite a bit sorry. I’m 21 weeks now and have a doctor’s appt. tomorrow, should i ask him or just wait? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I remember the reason I was tested last time was because i was losing weight. If that helps any.
now i think it is standard procedure i think at 28 weeks
so they will usually tell u but u can always ask
and its obiviously an easy test cuz u had it b4 so
best of luck
o and i forgot if they test u at 28 weeks and it comes negative u can still develop it later on but usually u gain more wieght cuz the baby is bigger
i dunno all i know is i was tested at 28 weeks and didnt have it and then at the end developed it and had a 11 pound baby so if u ever think somethin is wrong DONT b afraid to ask questions
I have just found out that I have gestational diabetes and I am over 37 weeks pregnant. It has gone undiagnosed and we have found out that I why my baby is so large. She is already 8 pounds 12 ounces based on the ultra sound. They won’t let us induce until at least 39 weeks. I have been eating healthy but not healthy for someone with gestational diabetes. My concerns are now with my baby and I want her to be healthy. Any personal expieriences would be great!
I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy. The only real difficulty was a very long labor due to a large baby. A large baby is probably all you will have to deal with. If the baby is too large you may end up with a C-section so prepare for that. Don’t worry, you will probably both be fine.
This is my 2nd pregnancy to last past the 1st trimester. I had no problems with my daughter. I was overweight when I got pregnant, but healthy, no signs of diabetes. Only distant relatives in my family had it, and only 1 or 2 people in my husband’s family. As soon as the Doctor discovered it, I was admitted into the hospital. I was there for 6 days, no IVs, no regular meds, just a fetal monitor 3 times a day, a special diet and insulin only if my blood sugar went really high (which only happened about 4 times). They did an amnio, but they discovered she wasn’t ready yet, and discharged me, with no special meds, just to stay on the diet and check my sugar. I’m very scared. They were in such a hurry to get me into the hospital, and then i just sat for 6 days. The Doctors informed me of all the risks. (stillbirth, that she could be have diabetes, that i could keep the diabetes, jaundice, damage to her kidneys, etc.) Could someone just give me some help/advice???
Did they mention the possibility of giving you surfactant injections to mature the baby’s lungs? I think it would be your best option if your diabetes is difficult to control. Other than that, I would follow the diet they gave you exactly, test your blood sugar OFTEN, and do your kick counts. And don’t be afraid to call your doctor.
how do you get gestational diabetes, what are the signs symptoms??…
gestational diabetes happens when your body’s natural rhythm of making insulin is affected by the pregnancy.
Symptoms include increased thirst, glucose in your urine and high blood glucose levels.
If you suspect you need to get your urine tested for glucose first off.
The biggest risk for baby when mom had GD is baby may be too big causing shoulder dysplasia(may be spelt wrong) at birth, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) after birth. the risk for hypertension is more for the mother. You can have seizures, stroke, or coma from BP too high. They may induce early because the only cure for mom is delivery (it’s called preeclampsia) which depending on how far along you are, you may have a premature baby which in itself has multiple risks.
