excessive thirst? 11

Oct 21, 2009 | Diabetes Excessive Thirst

Does anyone know what excessive thirst is caused by? In the last 3 days i have drank like 2 1/2 to 3 gallons of tea and water. I have to have a drink every second of the day. If i go without drinking for more than an hour I feel sick. Does anyone know if this is normal, or is it a sign of something? I have been tested for diabetes and it was negitive. Could there be something else?
How can it be normal? I drink at least 5 glasses of liquid an HOUR. sometimes more! I’ve been tested for diabetes and anemia. I dont know i used to only drink like maybe 5 glasses of water a day.
I’m not really sure how much i pass at a time, but sometimes i have to go like 2-3 times an hour. Which may not be alot, but i used to go like 2-3 times a day. I wake up maybe 3 times a night to go.

Polydipsia or excessive thirst is frequently caused by sugar problems (diabetes and insulin resistance) but not always.
You might be sodium deficient. Are you on medication that could cause this?

sweet smelling urine and excessive thirst in 1 year old? 6

Oct 09, 2009 | Diabetes Excessive Thirst

I’m pretty sure it’s not diabetes. She’s had her blood sugar tested twice, once after fasting and it was 79 and once 4 hours after a meal which was 83. So I’m pretty sure that diabetes can be ruled out. But is it just my daughter that has sweet smelling urine, is that normal? Or is it something else? Has anyone had this? Just curious, thank you!
they check msud when they are born now days, it was fine. Also, the reason why diabetes was suspected is because my niece has type 1 diabetes and I have an autoimmune disease.

I take 4 insulin injections and numerous oral medications per day for my type 1 diabetes. I have also slipped off the wagon and consumed far more carbs than healthy for me. I can manipulate my glucose results BUT there is a test which is not commonly run which my doc uses. It’s an HbA1C. It tells a 3 month tale of glucose levels whereas the other tests reflects what’s in my circulatory system NOW. It may be that the wrong test is being done. Get some suggestions from your local Diabetes Association, too.

what is classed as excessive thirst in a baby? 3

Sep 27, 2009 | Diabetes Excessive Thirst

My son is showing signs of diabetes the main 1 is i cant feed him enough he is always hungry I couldnt get a drs appt today so am left worried all weekend can any1 tell me what would be classed as excessive thirst (he just turned 1) also he is severly anemic (on iron) hb level 7.2 does any1 know if anemia is common in diabetes
To the first answerer if you can read i said i couldnt get an appointment so maybe you should get with the programme and only answer if you have something worthwhile to add

I worried about the same thing with my son and he is now 21 months old, he just could not get enough to drink. I took him to his pediatrician and he told me that in babies and sometimes children that a sign of juvenile onset diabetes is excessive vomiting. I had never known that, So we waited out the thirst and he has calmed down now and is doing fine! Hope it all turns out alright for you.

Are there signs/symptoms of gestational diabetes? 3

Sep 21, 2009 | Signs Symptoms of Diabetes

I have my glucose screening tomorrow and even though I told myself I wouldn’t freak out and worry about it excessively, I’m starting to. LOL I have had a very easy, complication free pregnancy so far, so whenever something like this comes up I get kinda batty with anxiety…like my luck is about to run out, ya know?

So I was just wondering what all you know about gestational diabetes. Are certain women more at risk than others? For example, are overweight or obese women more likely to have it, as is the case with regular diabetes? Are there signs/symptoms of it that can tip you off to the problem before being tested?
I don’t know if this matter, but I am no overweight at all. I was 112 lbs pre-pregnancy at my 24 week appointment I had gained 14 lbs. I am now 27 weeks and have probably gained a total of 18 or 19 lbs.
Sari – Ok, you’re like the 5th or 6th person to tell me about not being told to fast before the test, having the results skewed by what you ate and having to take the 3 hour one! It’s starting to sound like a conspiracy to get a woman to fail the first so she has to take (and pay for) the second.

Well I’m really curious about this & since no one is answering, I’m looking it up

Causes and Risk Factors of Gestational diabetes

-over the age of 30
-obesity
-family history of diabetes
-having previously given birth to a very large child (over 9 pounds, 14 ounces), having previously given birth to a stillborn child or a child with a birth defect
-having too much amniotic fluid
-having gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy
-having high blood pressure

Symptoms of Gestational diabetes

Generally, gestational diabetes may not cause any symptoms, however, the woman may experience excessive weight gain, excessive hunger or thirst, excessive urination or recurrent vaginal infections.

What could an excessive thirst be a symptom of? 18

Sep 15, 2009 | Diabetes Excessive Thirst

For the past couple of months, I’ve noticed that I am increasing thirsty. I drink water during the day when I feel thirsty, and I find that I am drink 8-10 pints a day. I’m just really thirsty!

I’ve been tested for diabetes before, and the tests have been negative. With the fasting blood tests I didn’t eat after midnight like they said, but did binge and eat a lot up till midnight. Could that have affected it?

drinking that much water need not mean you have diabetes (even if thats suppsoed to be a symptom)… i used to drink a lotta water just like you sometime ago and i’m pretty sure i haven’t got diabetes or anything else (had a general check-up too recently)…

my grandma used to say thats bcos i’m eating lotsa salty items or items which contain more salt than water… and i dont think thats an old wives’ tale either…

anyway chill out..!! if you feel like it, get another test done… but dont get all fretted over it or you might really get diabetes out of some kinda "psychological reaction"…

:-)

I am young, healthy weight, didn’t lose weight since excessive thirst but could I still have diabetes? 3

Sep 09, 2009 | Diabetes Excessive Thirst

I pee a lot more, and I’m really thirsty…I sometimes have nausea and minor headaches, and I feel tired(although when I sleep well,IN THE EVENING I’m kinda "hyperactive").I don’t pee to the point of waking up at night though.I didn’t really lose weight,I did gain some but I can explain it,coz I’m eating way more than I did before(well, for 3months or so I ate very little and exercised a lot,so I lost weight, and now I gained most of it back),so yea it is kinda expected. But I still never been overweight,I just always was a bit chubby,on the healthy weight range.I do eat quite some sugar, but I’m always running on the stairs, and exercise for AT LEAST twice a week.None of my parents have diabetes, none of my aunts and uncles, none of my cousins, but my grandma does, and she had it at an old age,so yea,it’s kind of common.I’m so extremely scared and I don’t ever drink soda since a year ago,I don’t add sugar to tea or coffee, but I eat lots of chocolate, sweets, fruit.I am turning 14next month

You may be at risk. The internet is not a good place for medical diagnosis. Diabetes can only be diagnosed by a doctor. Eating chocolate and sweets will not create diabetes but if you are diabetic then they can greatly aggravate the condition.
excercise is good..follow a good diet with fruits and veggies (not fried) and a very limited amount of meat..this is good whether or not you are diabetic. Type II diabetes often de velops over a period of years so you could be "pre-diabetic" even if no one in your family has a history of it. There is an inexpensive test available at large pharmacies…the a1c test. It measures the average glucose in your system for the past 3 months. There is a "strip test" with a meter but that is not unless you know you have diabetes and can be prescribed by a doctor. The a1c is at my local walmart for $8…. follow directions carefully read them until you are SURE you understand….the test requires a 12 hour fast(nothing to eat for 12 hours) best done overnight…do not eat anything (you can drink water) after supper and test before breakfast the next day. The test will give a number…
any where from 5 to 7 is normal with 6 being the best..if you are near the high or low end see a doctor and get a better test. I am glad you are concerned about this even though you do not seem to be a HIGH risk. Better to check it out..Someday a test like this will be given in school (like the patch test etc) Good luck and remember this is only a suggestion…if you are really concerned see a doctor.

What r the signs/symptoms of having diabetes? 4

Sep 09, 2009 | Signs Symptoms of Diabetes

any early treatment?

The symptoms of diabetes may begin gradually and can be hard to identify at first. They may include fatigue, a sick feeling, frequent urination, especially at night, and excessive thirst. When there is extra glucose in blood, one way the body gets rid of it is through frequent urination. This loss of fluids causes extreme thirst. Other symptoms may include sudden weight loss, blurred vision, and slow healing of skin, gum and urinary tract infections. Women may notice genital itching.

The classic symptoms of diabetes are:
frequent urination, with large volumes of urine (polyuria),
excessive thirst (polydipsia),
hunger (polyphagia), and
weight loss.
Other symptoms might include:
fatigue,
blurry vision,
odd aches and pains,
dry mouth,
dry or itchy skin,
impotence (in a male),
vaginal yeast infections (in a female),
poor healing of cuts and scrapes, or
excessive or unusual infections.

Not everybody will have every one of these symptoms. Indeed, some people may have no symptoms at all!

If you have these symptoms, then you’ll need testing of your blood sugar levels.
