Complications of Diabetes.? 6

Nov 30, 2009 | Complications of Diabetes

My mother had diabetes when I was a teen. Before she died she was left a with multiple amputations and only had her right arm left. Had anyone had servere complications or know of people that have them? I am woried as I just found I have diabetes and I am determined to not be like my mother and keep control of my diabetes.

Hi Nicki, welcome to the club. (I’m guessing you were diagnosed with type 2). While my mother did not suffer multiple amputations, she suffered just about everything else and ended up incapacitated in a nursing home with dementia.

Why not do as I did and use this opportunity to learn as much as you can about controlling the disease? I have turned it around and am actually thriving on it. I’ve lost weight, I’m more energetic, and feel great. There are so many things you can do. In addition to the obvious, like diet and exercise, did you know that a half teaspoon of cinnamon each day can boost the effectiveness of your insulin? Did you know that fresh bitter melon can reduce your blood sugar? I learned all this stuff in my second year with the disease. The first year was total denial. Eating like a pig, drinking, you name it.

Why not visit my profile (click on ole Foghorn), and check out some of my findings? It’s a non commercial, personal website that I’ve posted tons of info on to help people like you and me become less dependent on useless healthcare "professionals".

Vision gets blurry when I’m hungry; i tested negative for diabetes..what could it be? 3

Nov 20, 2009 | Diabetes Blurred Vision

I get that too.My vision would be blurry, I would get all shaky & feel really unwell all of a sudden. My symptoms were due to low blood pressure.

Blurred vision when I wake up in the morning…? 1

Nov 15, 2009 | Diabetes Blurred Vision

This question has been asked before, but I didn’t find one similar to my own.
First off, I know I don’t have diabetes (my sister has it and I test my blood sugar daily).
Secondly, I just purchased a mask for my eyes to help me sleep (this was on Saturday) and since I have been using it, I have woken up with blurry vision- either in one eye or both eyes- that gradually dissipates as the day moves forward.
Before going to my doctor, I want to know if it’s plausible to say that it:

A) Is constricting my blood vessels and therefore giving me blurred vision; or
B) The moisture is retained in my eyes and causes blurred vision.

I hope you can enlighten me on the matter. Thanks :)

Your eye is just affected by the mask e.g when you put your finger on one eye for ten seconds and then open it your vision will be blurred for a bit. This could last longer for you because you have the mask on all night.

Blurred vision caused by activity ? 2

Nov 11, 2009 | Diabetes Blurred Vision

I’ve been getting blurred vision intermitantly. It started a few months ago. I would get out of the shower and have blurred vision for a couple of hours, then I noticed if I did any activity like walk the dog my vision would go blurred for a while. It always starts with an activity then settles after a couple of hours of rest. I have been tested for Diabetes and all my blood tests came back clear. I have been to see the Dr’s at the eye clinic and they are arranging a brain MRI scan. Any ideas as to what could be causing this to happen? My eyes looked fine when they examined them. All the Dr said was ‘there is obviously something irritating the nerves in your eyes and body’.
I have also been getting pins and needles and numbness on and off in various places. But what could cause it to be so on and off ??

Thanks x
Haven’t got high blood pressure. All of the small things have been checked x

This could be anything, really. But make absolutely sure that you don’t give up until the doctors find out what it is. If they say they don’t know, tell them it’s their job to find out, no matter if they need to take another round of new blood tests.
It’s reassuring that they will do an MRI, but I think it’s unlikely that they will find anything.

If it starts with an activity, it would probably not be diabetes, since the blurred vision in diabetes is due to high blood sugar, while doing an activity lowers blood sugar.

It could also be migraine with aura only, but then it should go away quicker. If your eyes hurt, then it could be retinal migraine, but it really doesn’t sound like it (also it’s very rare).

I think that the most probable guess right now is that you have an autoimmune disease (maybe SLE, systemic lupus). Usually you would have more symptoms (like fatigue), but all diseases have to start somewhere (and may not get worse either).
To be on the safe side, your doctor should take at least these blood tests: ANA, anti-SM, dsDNA, CRP and Vasculitis.

The eye doctor should also have checked the pressure of your eyes.

Can gestational diabetes appear in the last 3 weeks? 6

Nov 07, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

I’ve had normal tests all the way through this pregnancy, but lately I get these dizzy/weak spells accompanied by a cold sweat. Both of my parents are diabetic and I know that signs like that can either mean blood sugar is too low or too high.
I tested my blood sugar the other day when I felt like this and it was 120, which from what I understand is normal in someone who does not have diabetes. Well I felt like that again earlier and I tested it and it was 97, which my mother said was kinda low and that I needed to eat soon.
Can gestational diabetes just suddenly appear at the last second? Or hypoglycemia which is lower-than-normal blood sugar?

no
they pick it up early around 28 weeks so they time to get your diet and shots under control

diabetes complications….? 3

Nov 07, 2009 | Complications of Diabetes

i have heard lots of bad stories
about people that diabetes complications.

my question is…
is it possible to get complications
even if you blood sugar is in good control???

sorry if this is a dumb question
i just want to know

thanks in advance for the answers

It’s possible, but not likely that you will have severe complications as long as you keep you blood sugar under control. However, if you smoke or drink or do drugs, you will be more at risk than other smokers, drinkers and drug users. You should also try to exercise and eat healthy to help avoid complications

Can low blood sugar lead to diabetes, or can the symptoms be confused with one another? 6

Oct 15, 2009 | Diabetes Excessive Thirst

Hi, I’ve had low blood sugar in the past and I looked up the symptoms for diabetes and I have:
Frequent urination
Excessive thirst
Increased fatigue
Irritability

Just wondering if the sypmtoms are the same, or if my low blood sugar could eventually lead to something else. Or maybe I’m just paranoid, lol.
I’m a young teen if that helps.

Diabetes and low blood sugar are totally opposite of each other, but it is very common for a diabetic to have bouts of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when they take too much insulin, don’t eat when they should, and a variety of other reasons. Low blood sugar can cause nausea, sweating, shakiness, confusion, passing out, coma and even death. Many people that were hypoglycemic for many years find themselves being diagnosed with diabetes later on. Seems like for some (me included) that hypoglycemia can be a prelude to diabetes. You do have some symptoms of diabetes and you should be checked by a doctor to be sure. A person can be hypoglycemic and not have diabetes. My husband has had it most of his life and some times it is very bad, and he can have multiple low blood sugar episodes a day if he isn’t careful to eat like he should. Here are some more of the most common symptoms of diabetes. They are symptoms for both types of diabetes.

Constant thirst
Frequent urination
Constant hunger
Irritability
Blurry vision
Itching skin with no rash
Reoccurring yeast infections in women, itching penis in men
Frequent boils
Leg cramps
Burning tingling sensation in hands, feet, arms, or legs
Slow healing wounds
Headaches
Nausea or vomiting
