Testing for gestational diabetes?

Sep 30, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

I’m on my 3rd pregnancy and have only been tested during my last pregnancy for gestational diabetes. I’m just wondering if you are supposed to be tested each time or only if there are warning signs. If so what are the warning signs, and how far along should you be to be tested? My last pregnancy was over 6 years ago so I’ve forgotten quite a bit sorry. I’m 21 weeks now and have a doctor’s appt. tomorrow, should i ask him or just wait? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I remember the reason I was tested last time was because i was losing weight. If that helps any.

now i think it is standard procedure i think at 28 weeks
so they will usually tell u but u can always ask
and its obiviously an easy test cuz u had it b4 so
best of luck

o and i forgot if they test u at 28 weeks and it comes negative u can still develop it later on but usually u gain more wieght cuz the baby is bigger
i dunno all i know is i was tested at 28 weeks and didnt have it and then at the end developed it and had a 11 pound baby so if u ever think somethin is wrong DONT b afraid to ask questions

your dr will test you each time being that every pregnancy is different. they will give you this nasty drink that you will have to take right before you go in for the visit after this one. if you ask them, they will give you any info you need. but most likely you will recieve the stuff tomorrow .

The testing is pretty new and they usually test older women who are pregnant, it may be that you fall into that category?

First congrats. Blessings with the pregnancy and child(ren).
It’s been 11 years since I was pregnant. I only remember that I was tested in the second pregnancy because our first child was a large baby. She was 8lbs 4 oz and I only gained 12 pounds. My Doc thought it best to check for gest. diabetes to be safe. (second child was 9 lbs 12 oz) I didn’t have gest diabetes with either.
    Good luck!

Its usually routine. If you had any blood work done your hemoglobins may ahave been high. Some Dr.s test depending on your weight or if you gained a lot of weight while you were pregnant. Warning signs tough when you are pregnant. Thirtsy, hungry all the time, burning senstaion (ankles), moody. A lot of systems that may be jsut because you are pregnant.

Between 24-28 your doctor will test you for gestational diabetes, if your first test is high, then you will be tested again then if that test is high then you have it. It usually goes away but you may develop it later on in life. Meanwhile, just watch your sugar intake until then.

I am too on my third pregnancy and my last one was almost seven years ago. They have tried to test me every time but i have puked(from the nasty sugary drink) and passed out. But alast he plans to do it again this pregnancy at about 28-30 weeks. It is routine and they do it to everyone. I don’t know of any warning aigns though. Hope this helps
