No gestational diabetes! Yesss! But very low iron. What brand of iron pills do you suggest?

Oct 27, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

29wks1dy pregnant.

I was so worried I’d have GD bc all signs pointed to it:
- Gaining a great amount of weight (have already gained about 45lbs)
- ALWAYS hungry
- Baby weighed a guesstimated amount of 2lbs5oz at 27wks1dy on u/s. Doc said that she was a big baby.

Proud to say I don’t have GD!

But I have very low iron. What brand of iron pills do you suggest? Preferably small iron pills.

Thanks!

You can also try eating healthier foods and less fast food. Don’t know how you eat or anything, but I always try eating better first before I try pills.

Even with a well balanced diet, you don’t need to take prenatal vitamins because you get all the same vitamins the way you are supposed to when you eat healthy. But please take the vitamins you need if you don’t get them from the food you eat. I’m not saying to stop taking them.

Just try getting your iron from the food you eat. It will help encourage a healthier diet which is better for your baby. Then try the pills if that doesn’t work.

I can’t think of the name right now, but I took iron pills that had a ‘built-in’ stool softener. I got the extra iron I needed AND didn’t get horrifically constipated.

I just remembered what it was called: Slo-FE

The iron pills that I like is Slow Fe. It is the only Iron pill that doesn’t make me sick. I took them with my daughter and I am taking them this pregnancy only because with my son and daughter my iron was down too low so I am not taking the chance this time!!!! Best of luck. Congrats. Oh and for the always hungry thing. I have learned that fuits really work. I ate so much fruit while pregnant. lol… it is very filling

Visit your local natural foods store or naturalpath to get yourself some iron supplements that can be absorbed better then most over-the-counter brands. You have to be careful with iron as it will easily pass through you if you take it with caffeine. Natural supplements will not constipate you like other kinds as well.

When you have low iron your doctor should prescribe you iron tablets as they have stronger ones than stores sell, they work better and make you feel way better.

I’m glad you don’t have GD, i’m 31 weeks pregnant, at 28 weeks my baby was measuring 3lbs, i’ve gained over 33lbs since being pregnant, i’m constantly hungry too! I got tested for everything and it all came back normal, so i must just be unlucky.

I don’t know if any are more or less effective. Mine were a famous brand that I had seen advertised on TV and they were huge. It started with an "R"…

Whatever kind you get, ask your doctor to prescribe you a stool softener. Iron pills usually cause constipation. There are prescription prenatal vitamins that have a stool softener in them.

I just remembered I took Repliva. They were huge, but I didn’t have trouble taking them.

My iron was low as well. The best supplement I found was floradix liquid iron supplement. It’s non-constipating and has vitamin c, magnesium and b vitamins to help you absorb the iron. When I put it in a glass of juice I can’t even taste it. It’s all natural too. I got it at whole foods and also a vitamin store, I think it’s pretty common.
    Good Luck!
