What could an excessive thirst be a symptom of?
Sep 15, 2009 | Diabetes Excessive Thirst
For the past couple of months, I’ve noticed that I am increasing thirsty. I drink water during the day when I feel thirsty, and I find that I am drink 8-10 pints a day. I’m just really thirsty!
I’ve been tested for diabetes before, and the tests have been negative. With the fasting blood tests I didn’t eat after midnight like they said, but did binge and eat a lot up till midnight. Could that have affected it?
drinking that much water need not mean you have diabetes (even if thats suppsoed to be a symptom)… i used to drink a lotta water just like you sometime ago and i’m pretty sure i haven’t got diabetes or anything else (had a general check-up too recently)…
my grandma used to say thats bcos i’m eating lotsa salty items or items which contain more salt than water… and i dont think thats an old wives’ tale either…
anyway chill out..!! if you feel like it, get another test done… but dont get all fretted over it or you might really get diabetes out of some kinda "psychological reaction"…

Excessive thirst sounds like diabetes to me. Check with your doctor and ask for more test(s) and/or diagnoses. It could be a symptom of something else. Your dr. can help you with that -and be sure and tell him/her exactly what you’ve told us. Good luck!

This is usually a sign of diabetes. Make an appointment with your dr for a physical. Excess sugar in the body can spill over into the urine also. If you are still negative for diabetes you will at least have a link with your dr over a concern you have. Good Luck

It is good you have been tested for diabetes and are negative. However, you will have to watch what you eat so you avoid Type 2.
What kind of foods are you eating? If you have a high intake of salt, ie sodium, you may find yourself excessively thirsty.
Don’t binge, eat in moderation and keep a healthy and balanced diet. Exercise regularly.
Good luck.

when people have diabetes their sugar levels are different to those who havn’t got it, whether you have fasted or not. Do you smoke or use oral inhalers for asthma because both of these factors can make you significantly thirsty.

I wuld go back to see your GP – and yes, as you realise, binging up to midnight was a really silly idea.

If you binged and ate alot before midnight and the was negative, it would not of effected a negative result. Excessive thirst is definitely a symptom of Diabetes, but it could be caused by excessive sweating (due to a hot climate or if you are physically active and sweat while working out) or an intake of alot of salt. Other symptoms of Diabetes is increased urination( peeing alot) , excessive eating but, you lose weight. I would advise that you be evaluated by your Doc and then he/she can do further testing ( if warranted ). I would tell your Doc that you want to be tested again for Diabetes, just to be sure. I hope that this helps and Good Luck.

I think you are drinking the correct amount of water.
If you binged and were fine on your fasting sugar, you are probably not diabetic at this point. Have a finger stick done at your heatlh department.

Go back to your doctor and follow the test orders.

Were your thyroxine levels checked? You might be hyperthyroid.
It is also summer time here; if you live in a dry climate or work/live in air conditioned buildings these can really dehydrate your system.
Your binge eating would more likely cause a false positive than a false negative.

My advice to you is to get it checked again !

There are many possible causes for excessive thirst. These include:
increased exercise, which can increase the body’s water requirements
dehydration. This occur from any of a number of causes including diarrhea, infection, hot weather, vomiting, or the use of medications called diuretics that eliminate fluid from the body.
hormone imbalances. These may include a high level of thyroid hormone, a condition called hyperthyroidism, or a high level of adrenal hormones, called hyperadrenalism.
hypernatremia, which is a high level of sodium in the body
uncontrolled diabetes. This is a condition that causes an increase in blood sugar levels, triggering excessive thirst.
diabetes insipidus. Diabetes insipidus is a disease that causes people to urinate excessively and results in dehydration.
certain drugs or medications. The use of antihistamines, marijuana, caffeine, or alcohol can cause this condition.
psychogenic polydipsia, which is a psychiatric condition that causes a person to feel thirsty for no apparent reason
damage to an area of the brain called the hypothalamus. This is rare.
Other causes are also possible. Sometimes, no cause can be found.

This is the starting symptoms of diabetes. This may be several months before you develop it fully or it may not develop at all. Our metabolisms accept food and either break it down well or not. If you eat certain carbs (different for different people) then those foods can sometimes cause high blood pressure, low blood sugar in normal people or combined with lying down immediately after eating these foods. Just think about what you ate, when you became really thirsty. Listen, when this happened to me (I’m diabetic now), I would drink a gallon of tea or lemonade within three minutes and then have to run it out of my system. This behavior continued, on and off, for three months before it got seriously worse and now I take two shots a day and very healthy- just inconvience!
Watch out for brownies, waffles, wild rice, potatoes, eat only sweet and some pastas, pecan pie. Eating too much of some of these items can cause dryness/thirst.
