I would be concerned about diabetes insipidus not mellitus. Sign/symptoms of this disease is a tremendous thirst and very dilute urine. I once had drug induced diabetes insipidus, and what I went through sounds the same as what you are going through. Do you have to wake up once an hour when you sleep? Is your urine clear? Do you urinate more than 2 liters a day? If the answer is yes, then you might want to have a water deprevation test with your doctor and that will give the answer.
Add: Urinating more than 8 times a day is considered excessive.
References :
pharmacy student

Polydipsia or excessive thirst is frequently caused by sugar problems (diabetes and insulin resistance) but not always.
You might be sodium deficient. Are you on medication that could cause this?
Check out the links below to see if they apply.
References :
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003085.htmThirst

I was going to say to get tested for diabetes but you already covered that. Could be that you were dehydrated and your body is re hydrating itself. If you are nauseous and unable to keep food down you need to see a doctor for dehydration.

Good luck and may the drink be with you lol
References :
I don't know I have the same problem! And I showed negative for the diabetes test too. I went to the doctor again though and they're doing more blood tests, you should try that or what she suggested was eat every three hours something salty like pretzels or beef jerky. I'm trying it today, I don't know could work! Good luck!
References :
You could have an electrolyte imbalance.
It could be a kidney thing, your body is trying to dilute what it can't get rid of...
Could be a nerve thing, your brain tells you to drink fluids when you aren't low...

3 gallons is too much unless you are VERY active. You need to call the doc.
