Is there someone that could answer some questions about diabetes?
Nov 07, 2009 | Diabetes Blurred Vision
The strangest thing happened. Two weeks ago, my younger sister (28) started having blurred vision. She went to the doctor and was diagnosed with diabetes. This past weekend my younger brother (29) was having dizzy spells. He also went to the doctor and was also diagnosed with diabetes. That seems extremely strange that within a two week period they were both diagnosed diabetes and I was wondering if there maybe more to this, or if they were miss diagnosed. It does run in my family but still it seems weird.
Well, if they do have diabetes then yes it does (now) run in your family. I agree it’s quite a coincidence, but usually a diagnosis of diabetes is done based on monitoring blood sugar readings over a period of time, assuming they are type-2 diabetics and not type 1 (type 1′s don’t produce insulin and need shots to live, while type 2 can’t properly use the insulin they do produce). The usual symptoms are blurred vision, excessive thirst, and frequent urination. You can also be very tired all the time. So I would be very careful and get checked myself. It’s nothing to play with.

Not strange at all. Find out at what ages your other diabetic family members were when they noticed changes in health, problems with vision, dizzy spells. Find out how old they were when diagnosed. I have an ex-sister & brother-in-law (married to eachother) who were both diagnosed with DM2 the same day. That is more "weird" than your situation.

If one of your family members or any members that are related to you, and that person have diabetes, you might get a chance of being diagnonsed with diabetes.
Hope this helps! =)

They say that diabetes (1) is not hereditary…I found out in 1993, my brother found out in 1994, my son was diagnosed in 2003….tell me again that it isn’t hereditary.
Type 2 is hereditary, and genetic.

The fact that diabetes runs in your family, its not so weird. It runs in my family as well only in my family we got it later in life.
Make sure their doctor does an A1C test, this is a slow glucose test that gives you , your average for the last 3 months. I would also get a glucose meter and they should check their glucose when they get up, before a meal and 2 hours after a meal. And a second opinion never hurt.

it’s definitely a family thing!! and it is strange that it all happened in a two week span…but just think how much fun the next family gathering will be!!!!
the good thing is that there will be that much more support and understanding. learning about management, care, diet, highs and lows can be so overwhelming so it could very well be a blessing that it all happened at once. no one is in it alone!
oh, and blood glucose tests as far as i no don’t lie, so miss diagnosed, most probably not. good luck
