Is it possible i have diabetes at age 23?
Oct 24, 2009 | Diabetes Blurred Vision
I’m only 23.
But i have PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) which i know can increase the risk of diabetes.
I’m overweight.
I’ve been suffering with blurred vision after big meals, and feeling weak.
Is it possible i have diabetes at my age?
The answer is yes. A person can develop diabetes at any age.Being overweight is a bad thing for anyone especially someone that is a diabetic..If you get your weight under control, this is the first step to control diabetes if you have it. you should see a doctor and soon. Tell him/her your condition.

Diabetes can occur at any age. Go to your doctor and have a blood sugar check. PCOS increases insulin resistance so you might be put on metformin (a diabetic drug) which is now common practice in PCOS treatment if it’s severe enough.

there are two types of diabetes Type I and Type II
children even got it there is no age for that
you can check your fasting Glucose level and also there is a test called Microalbuminurea which gives an indication to the glucose level in the past three months
getting at the age of 23 means you could be non-insulin dependent patient it means you may control it with pills and diet
wish u luck

I too have PCOS. To manage the symptoms you need to lose weight and yes, being a fellow sufferer I know how hard this is!
Eat smaller, more nutritionally dense meals – by this is mean adding lots of green veg, a little brown rice / wholemeal pasta, plus eating protein (the meat/fish you eat should sit in your cupped palm).
I think the reason you are getting blurred vision and weakness after ‘big’ meals is you could be eating too much (and by that I’m meaning quantity plus large amounts of fats and sugars) in one hit which is placing a big strain on your system.
With PCOS you are at increased risk of several other illnesses so you do need to make sure your diet is as healthy as can be and that you are getting exercise each day.
If you are still concerned, visit your doctor for a blood test.
Also, please don’t go on Metformin. I was put on it and it actually made me worse – a side effect of taking it for too long is reduced Testosterone and you really don’t want to have those symptoms.

There are 2 types of diabetes, childhood and acquired. You could get either at your age. Being overweight is not good but lots of overweight people never get diabetes. But with your symptoms I would get checked out if I were you.

yes, you may have developed type two diabetes. I was 23 when I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. If they hadn’t found it, I would probably be very sick now. I am still pre-diabetic, but at least it hasn’t turned into diabetes yet.
A simple two hour blood test will be able to tell you whether you do or not. You go in after fasting, have a test. drink a glucose mixture, wait still for 2 hrs (boring) and then have another test to see how well you metabolize the sugar.
I gave up full sugar soft drinks, and try not to eat so bad now, the exercising hasn’t been working out so well, so I haven’t been losing weight, naughty me. But at least my blood sugar levels are getting better.

Increased thirst and blurred vision are two signs that you may have diabetes. If you have any of the symptoms listed below, you should be tested for the condition.
Development of symptoms
In type 1 diabetes, symptoms tend to develop rapidly, over a couple of weeks, and are more severe. In type 2 diabetes, symptoms develop slowly and are usually milder.
Common symptoms of both types of diabetes are:
increased thirst
passing water frequently, especially at night
tiredness and fatigue
loss of weight
genital itching or recurrent thrush
In type 1 diabetes, less common symptoms are:
cramps
constipation
blurred vision
recurrent skin infections
In type 2 diabetes, symptoms may go unnoticed for years
In type 2 diabetes, symptoms may go unnoticed for years, and only when complications of diabetes – such as foot ulceration or blurred vision occur – is diabetes diagnosed. Remember that all the symptoms may not be present. Whenever any of these symptoms arise, it’s important to be tested for diabetes.
Diagnosing diabetes
Diabetes may be detected in a routine urine test where excess glucose is present. In type 1 diabetes, people often develop symptoms over a few weeks. They may feel thirsty all the time and need to urinate a lot, and they may feel tired and lose weight.
A blood test that measures the level of glucose in the blood will confirm whether or not the underlying cause is diabetes.
