Can eating a lot of sugar cause gestational diabetes? ? 4

Oct 21, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

I have been craving sugar throughout my whole pregnancy and I’ve been eating a lot of candy lately, been trying to stop. I’m 26 weeks and I have my prenatal appt on wednesday to do the one hour test. I am far from overweight (5′4 127 lbs), obesity does not run in my family, and i dont have PCOS. (I heard all of these things increases the risk). However I have been urinating A LOT which i heard is a sign. Are my chances high?

Here’s how it works: eating sugar can’t case you to get gestational diabetes. It’s a genetic predisposition and there’s no way to tell completely that you will get it or not – you can guess by risk factors, but it’s not a guarantee.

However, if you have that genetic disposition, eating too much sugar will DEFINITELY affect whether you get high blood sugars during pregnancy. In other words, you could be predisposed for GD but if you ate like a gestational diabetic throughout your whole pregnancy you could avoid high blood sugars and would only show high on the actual test. The test would force it to show up because it’s a big dose of sugar/glucose all at once that measure how you react to sugar.

If you don’t have the predisposition for it and eat sugar all the time it will be bad for your teeth and weight gain, but your blood sugar will never go high. Your body manufactures enough insulin to cover as much sugar as you eat.

You don’t have to be overweight. A common indicator is if someone in your family tree is a type 2 diabetic, and certain ethnicities are more prone that others like Native Americans. Good luck!

Is dizziness a sign of diabetes? 9

Oct 15, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

I am 30, overweight and had gestational diabetes (diabetes when your pregnant). I dont have health insurance and cant get my blood sugar tested. Is dizziness a sign of diabetes? I am dizy after I eat sweets and last night after I ate pasta.

Dizziness is not usually a sign of diabetes though it can be a side effect of anti glycemic tablets if they drop your sugar level too much.

Pregnancy can often cause women to feel faint because circulation problems caused by pregnancy can lead to the brain being starved of oxygen.

Eating pasta or any heavy meals can occupy your blood moving food around so it can lead to a lack of sufficient oxygen to the brain.

Anyone with past experience w/ gestational diabetes in more than one pregnancy? 2

Oct 12, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

I am having my third biological child (my oldest is my stepson). i had gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy. my doctor said that it is most likely that i will have gestational diabetes with any future pregnancies. so with that being said, i am assuming i will have it again with this new pregnancy. and i have take steps to change my diet accordingly to keep my blood sugar in check. of course they don’t check for diabetes until later in the pregnancy..BUT i will be monitored more closely. (sorry…i ramble when im pregnant), my question is..has anyone been through 2 diabetic pregnancies. can diet and excersise prevent it? or is it more than likely inevitable that i will have gestational diabetes again with this baby.

and i would also like to know your experiences with a second diabetic pregnancy. signs of destress to look for, as i know i am considered "high risk".

thanks

I had gestational dibetes with my second daughter and she was almost 10 lbs at birth but i did not have it with my third and she only weighed 5lb 3.5oz but very healthy. Now i am 6 monthspregnant with baby number four and my only boy, my ob said that he is VERY big and actually change my due date by ten days and may change it more after getting the U/S results back. It is Prob diabetes again so i really don’t think it necisarily comes after having it previously. I really hope this was some help. Good luck and Blessed Be

gestational diabetes problem? 5

Tell me if you guys experienced the same thing…
I did the 1 hour gestational diabetes test today
About half way through drinking it, I got really hot. I was almost sweating trying to finish it. I stayed really hot the whole hour of waiting
Not to mention I felt really nauseated, I had to really control myself not to throw up
And I felt pretty light-headed
Is all that normal or maybe a sign of something?

Its normal because a lot of people aren’t used to getting so many sugar levels at once. I took the test a month ago and I felt sick for a few hours later. My doctor said its a totally normal reaction to the test. It is not an indication of the presence of gestational diabetes. If it makes you feel any better my test came out negative. Good luck!

Testing for gestational diabetes? 7

Sep 30, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

I’m on my 3rd pregnancy and have only been tested during my last pregnancy for gestational diabetes. I’m just wondering if you are supposed to be tested each time or only if there are warning signs. If so what are the warning signs, and how far along should you be to be tested? My last pregnancy was over 6 years ago so I’ve forgotten quite a bit sorry. I’m 21 weeks now and have a doctor’s appt. tomorrow, should i ask him or just wait? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I remember the reason I was tested last time was because i was losing weight. If that helps any.

now i think it is standard procedure i think at 28 weeks
so they will usually tell u but u can always ask
and its obiviously an easy test cuz u had it b4 so
best of luck

o and i forgot if they test u at 28 weeks and it comes negative u can still develop it later on but usually u gain more wieght cuz the baby is bigger
i dunno all i know is i was tested at 28 weeks and didnt have it and then at the end developed it and had a 11 pound baby so if u ever think somethin is wrong DONT b afraid to ask questions

I found out late that I have gestational diabetes. (35 weeks) I’m worried about my baby and me. Someone Help! 3

This is my 2nd pregnancy to last past the 1st trimester. I had no problems with my daughter. I was overweight when I got pregnant, but healthy, no signs of diabetes. Only distant relatives in my family had it, and only 1 or 2 people in my husband’s family. As soon as the Doctor discovered it, I was admitted into the hospital. I was there for 6 days, no IVs, no regular meds, just a fetal monitor 3 times a day, a special diet and insulin only if my blood sugar went really high (which only happened about 4 times). They did an amnio, but they discovered she wasn’t ready yet, and discharged me, with no special meds, just to stay on the diet and check my sugar. I’m very scared. They were in such a hurry to get me into the hospital, and then i just sat for 6 days. The Doctors informed me of all the risks. (stillbirth, that she could be have diabetes, that i could keep the diabetes, jaundice, damage to her kidneys, etc.) Could someone just give me some help/advice???

Did they mention the possibility of giving you surfactant injections to mature the baby’s lungs? I think it would be your best option if your diabetes is difficult to control. Other than that, I would follow the diet they gave you exactly, test your blood sugar OFTEN, and do your kick counts. And don’t be afraid to call your doctor.

gestational diabetes? 2

how do you get gestational diabetes, what are the signs symptoms??…

gestational diabetes happens when your body’s natural rhythm of making insulin is affected by the pregnancy.
Symptoms include increased thirst, glucose in your urine and high blood glucose levels.
If you suspect you need to get your urine tested for glucose first off.

Gestational diabetes at 27th week? 3

Sep 21, 2009 | Signs of Gestational Diabetes

I was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes…I am mad because I know it’s dangerous for the baby and the doctor didn’t tell me anything when I had symptoms of diabetes before…Since week 20th I told him that sometimes I couldn’t see anything because my vision was very blurred that I had to just lay down. I also told him that my female parts were burning, but without any discharge, and that I was feeling very weak and extremely hungry. He just said it’s normal and he just said that I had gained too much weight…I have gained over 60 lbs already and I am only 27 weeks. I found out that all those are signs of diabetes, but I just found out and I am very worried of the effects on my baby until now…I wonder why if my glucose was so high they didn’t notice it on any of my previous appointments because they did urine tests all the time and they never told me anything…Any comments on that? Anyone has an idea of why they didn’t find out before? Thanks

Unless you were spilling sugar into your urine, it wouldn’t have shown up on the stick they use to dip it. I know that there are sticks that only test for protein, but all the ones my CNM and OB use are for glucose and protein and I can’t imagine a doc would not use the "duostix" for pregnant patients. As far as your weight gain and symptoms (blurred vision)…those are "red flags" for an early screening. I’m sorry it was not caught sooner. You might consider changing physicians. It’s never too late to do so. I’ve heard of women firing their OB when they were in early labor, so that’s something to think about.
