Does anyone know what excessive thirst is caused by? In the last 3 days i have drank like 2 1/2 to 3 gallons of tea and water. I have to have a drink every second of the day. If i go without drinking for more than an hour I feel sick. Does anyone know if this is normal, or is it a sign of something? I have been tested for diabetes and it was negitive. Could there be something else?
How can it be normal? I drink at least 5 glasses of liquid an HOUR. sometimes more! I’ve been tested for diabetes and anemia. I dont know i used to only drink like maybe 5 glasses of water a day.
I’m not really sure how much i pass at a time, but sometimes i have to go like 2-3 times an hour. Which may not be alot, but i used to go like 2-3 times a day. I wake up maybe 3 times a night to go.

Polydipsia or excessive thirst is frequently caused by sugar problems (diabetes and insulin resistance) but not always.
You might be sodium deficient. Are you on medication that could cause this?

Excessive thirst
Increased fatigue
Irritability

Just wondering if the sypmtoms are the same, or if my low blood sugar could eventually lead to something else. Or maybe I’m just paranoid, lol.
I’m a young teen if that helps.

Diabetes and low blood sugar are totally opposite of each other, but it is very common for a diabetic to have bouts of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when they take too much insulin, don’t eat when they should, and a variety of other reasons. Low blood sugar can cause nausea, sweating, shakiness, confusion, passing out, coma and even death. Many people that were hypoglycemic for many years find themselves being diagnosed with diabetes later on. Seems like for some (me included) that hypoglycemia can be a prelude to diabetes. You do have some symptoms of diabetes and you should be checked by a doctor to be sure. A person can be hypoglycemic and not have diabetes. My husband has had it most of his life and some times it is very bad, and he can have multiple low blood sugar episodes a day if he isn’t careful to eat like he should. Here are some more of the most common symptoms of diabetes. They are symptoms for both types of diabetes.

Constant thirst
Frequent urination
Constant hunger
Irritability
Blurry vision
Itching skin with no rash
Reoccurring yeast infections in women, itching penis in men
Frequent boils
Leg cramps
Burning tingling sensation in hands, feet, arms, or legs
Slow healing wounds
Headaches
Nausea or vomiting
Get tested ASAP

She’s had her blood sugar tested twice, once after fasting and it was 79 and once 4 hours after a meal which was 83. So I’m pretty sure that diabetes can be ruled out. But is it just my daughter that has sweet smelling urine, is that normal? Or is it something else? Has anyone had this? Just curious, thank you!
they check msud when they are born now days, it was fine. Also, the reason why diabetes was suspected is because my niece has type 1 diabetes and I have an autoimmune disease.

I take 4 insulin injections and numerous oral medications per day for my type 1 diabetes. I have also slipped off the wagon and consumed far more carbs than healthy for me. I can manipulate my glucose results BUT there is a test which is not commonly run which my doc uses. It’s an HbA1C. It tells a 3 month tale of glucose levels whereas the other tests reflects what’s in my circulatory system NOW. It may be that the wrong test is being done. Get some suggestions from your local Diabetes Association, too.

I woke up and looked up the symptoms and one of them is excessive thirst. I do drink many big glasses/day since I gave up soda, but there are times (especially after I eat a meal or when I feel really tired) that I can down a 40 oz bottle of water in one big drink and then I feel better. Is this normal? Is this excessive? What’s the difference? Do most people crave a giant glass of water after meals?

"excessive thirst" is when you drink that 40 oz of water and DON’T feel better! yes, peole often need a big glass of water (I like iced tea . . .) right after the meal becasue of all the salt in the meal.

Diabetes canNOT be diagnosed from symptoms alone. You need one or two blood tests.

The first test is called A1C, A normal reading is between 5 and 6. If you have normal readings then your are probably NOT diabetic.

If the A1C reading is more than 7, the doctor shold order a Glucose Tolerance Test. This test will tell you definately, yes or no, if you have diabetes.

Why take two tests? The A1C test is quick (5-10 minutes if the doctor has the equpiment), easy, cheap, and painless. No use doing the "big test" if you don’t need it.

The Glucose Tolerance Test is more complicated, takes longer (3-4 hours), is more expensive, and is a bit painful. So do the A1C test FIRST and maybe avoid the more complicated, painful test.

But diabetes can be positively diagnosed ONLY with blood tests, not by symptoms.

I worried about the same thing with my son and he is now 21 months old, he just could not get enough to drink. I took him to his pediatrician and he told me that in babies and sometimes children that a sign of juvenile onset diabetes is excessive vomiting. I had never known that, So we waited out the thirst and he has calmed down now and is doing fine! Hope it all turns out alright for you.

Excessive is pretty much means alot. More than usual… uhm 8-9 cups of water is perfect. Theres nothing to be worried about. Should be worried about peeing 3-4 times either because your drinking 8 cups of water :)

When we are hypovolemic we get really thirsty. But diabetes has specific symptoms like fruity smelling breath, etc. Knock off the sugar and consult with the experts at the diabetic QA……..due to being thirsty over weeks as opposed to days.
